Chapter 20

THE WILL

Cutting through the Avlaim skies, Kai couldn’t stop thinking about the recent events. Numerous islands and inland seas rushed past him as he replayed everything in his head.

He was behind everything all this time. He turned Kyle against me so that he could save me at the last minute. Kyle will come back for the remaining particles of the Trophy, I have no doubts about it. I need to do something, fast. Now that Magnus is out of the picture, I can only turn to Green to train me for my next encounter with Kyle, he thought, looking at the settlements flickering below. Green knew that I would get my memory back. That was why he said I might not want to contact him. He knew that I would remember Greenrow taking Julie away and trying to kidnap Rune’Tan. He may be a different person now, but I can’t just forget everything, can I? He sighed. I don’t really have a choice, do I? If I hadn’t run into Kyle, I probably would have turned down the offer and If I didn’t know that there was a Trophy owner, I would have sent Green to hell... Though, without his help, I wouldn’t have been able to save Acilla so soon. Even with the Trophy, infiltrating the House of Blood was risky. Rihanna is no less dangerous than the Puppeteer.

Having spotted the island he needed near the Great Belt — a giant anomaly separating the north and south of Avlaim — Kai began to slow down and descend.

But why is Green doing this? Why would he help me take the Trophy? Just what is he planning?

After landing in the center of the small village below, Kai went to the largest building. He had learned about this place only after returning to Insulaii, when Lilith reported about Void’s visit to Nogatta. The powerful Asur, the Second Prince of Abyss, came at the beginning of the war and handed the letter. Disclosed in it were a bunch of coordinates.

“Hey! Who are you?!” a boy of about eight years shouted. The house behind him was strikingly different from the ones surrounding it, sticking out like a sore thumb.

“Get out of here before Uncle Green shows up and turns you into dust!” the boy added.

Kai smiled, slowing down a little.

“Turn me into dust?”

“I saw him do it with my own eyes! There was a whole ship of very strong pirates near the shore! True Masters who destroyed mountains with one stroke! They were causing us a lot of trouble, but then Uncle Green showed up and they crumbled into dust along with their ship! So get out of here! Strangers have no place here!”

“I’m not a stranger,” Kai said, approaching the gate and staring at the boy who had retreated further away. “Isn’t that right, Green?”

“That’s right,” Green replied as he stepped out on the threshold.

Startled by his sudden appearance, the boy turned around.

“Is he your friend, Uncle Green?”

“He is. One of my oldest friends, actually.
